WHY SEWING?
It was once a necessity, a part of life, a way to solve your own problems and ensure our families were taken care of. In recent years with the advent of disposable clothing, busier lives, and the lack of good instruction, sewing skills are not taught or passed on, but it is desperately needed. There are so many benefits to learning how to sew. You can create something useful and beautiful from scratch. It can give you the opportunity to be creative and express yourself, showing your own unique style. There is also nothing like that moment when you get to say Thanks, I made it myself! Sewing can save you money or make you money. Did you rip a hole in your favorite skit? No problem, no need to buy another or pay someone else to do it. Does the neighbor’s kid need school pants hemmed? That is a quick $10 bucks!
Is this class only for females?
Absolutely not! Obviously, everyone could use the knowledge of how to sew. Let’s say you have an important interview, and you pull your best suit out of the closet: and there’s a hole in your collar. You can either rummage for some tape or find a stapler for a quick fix and hope that no one notices the amateur job. But if you know how to sew, it can take only 10 minutes and you’re ready to go. Need some curtains in your new place? You can find the fabric you love and make custom curtains to help you feel at home. Sewing is for everyone! Even Spiderman made his own costume.
Taking this class, students will demonstrate leadership, initiative, imagination, creativity, spontaneity, and ingenuity in a range of creative processes. Learning to sew will permanently enrich your life but outside of the obvious benefits, there are others.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
o Critical thinking and sewing go hand in hand! “What does that instruction mean? How do I make the adjustment I want? What would happen if I tried this? All the actions described in the very definition of critical thinking can be applied to the art of sewing without any true effort needed to adapt the definition to the task. From the planning stages to the final stitch, critical thinking must come into play if you wish to have a successful outcome. This is a transferable skill in all aspects of life that you will gain by taking sewing classes.
Make new friends!!
o Sewing can be social! You can connect with others who share your love of sewing. There are hundreds of clubs, societies, and sew-along events around the country you can join in and make new friends.
Math Skills
o MEASURING!! It’s all about numbers! your garment. Math is everywhere in the sewing process, determining how much fabric you need times how much it will cost, adjusting pattern sizes to fit, you can't avoid it at all. It's geometry and algebra: it's reading a ruler, figuring out how many pieces can fit into a whole, dividing, multiplying, adding, subtracting. It's seeing how those numbers on your homework sheet will have a purpose in real life and putting it into practice. Math skills are sharpened when learning to sew.
Building Confidence
o Making something yourself is an absolute confidence booster. It's taking raw materials, a plan, and a set of skills that you are working hard to develop and creating something functional: a pillow, a bag, or clothes that you or your family can wear. Whether successfully or even unsuccessfully completing your sewing project you will learn to trust yourself more. Learning a new skill or making progress on a creative project can vastly improve how you feel about yourself.
Patience
o If you sew, you understand this. Sewing takes time, thought, and often tears. So much goes into sewing and it can get overwhelming. A student who learns to sew can learn to cope with frustrations and how to give themselves a time out. The more patient and focused students are the less likely they are to get frustrated or give up on a project before it’s done. This skill will help you learn how to deal with problems in life, whether they’re small or large.
Communication and Direction-Following Abilities
o Learning to sew will require being able to communicate and follow directions. Reading and following a pattern is the hardest part of sewing for many people. This class will afford students the opportunity to practice vital communication skills in a comfortable setting that welcomes all questions and ideas. Communication through written/oral, and active listening are practiced.
Sewing Opens Many Future Career Opportunities for Kid
o The art and science of sewing is a valuable skill that can open our students up to many career opportunities in the future. They can go on to become a Seamstress/Tailor, a fashion designer, an interior designer, or a sewing instructor.
